R.I.P. TRL

The nail has been driven into the music-coffin over at MTV. TRL: Total Request Live,  is being cancelled after 10 years on the air.

What once was the stations highest rated program, and last source for actual music-videos, is being axed for what I’m sure will be more reality television and fake teen dramas.

I remember in TRL’s hay day, between 1998-2001, every night was a battle for the top-spot in popular music. The viewer voted videos created drama between the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, N*SYNC, and The Backstreet Boys- just to name a few. That excitement spilled over to the VMA awards.

The bosses at MTV have been scratching their heads, wondering why viewer interest in the VMA awards has waned considerably in recent years? It’s simple: the music video has been M.I.A. on MTV for along time. Most viewers have never even seen the videos that are nominated, hence, no drama or feelings invested in them.

I should take over MTV. I would clean house. I would bring back music videos of all genres while keeping a select amount of reality shows and specials, but only air them once or twice per week! We don’t need a ‘Hills’ marathon everyday!
