Rosie Live: It Aint Over Till The . . .

Did you watch Rosie Live? If you did, like me, you were one of the few who tuned in. Rosie’s attempt at reviving the variety show – tying with the evenings lowest rated program, was dead on arrival. Apparently viewers like their Rosie taped and unfiltered?
The problem with Rosie’s variety show was the lack of variety! It started off well enough with Ro singing and dancing with the fragile Liza Minnelli. It kept me on the edge of my seat! It looked like Liza could break at any minute.
After an inspired tap-dancing number, Rosie brought out some little kids who looked like they put on tap shoes for the first time; they were cute and all but the show went down hill from there.
There were no real sketches. The drawing above is more of a sketch than anything on Rosie Live. The stage was dark and lacked any sets.
Alec Baldwin showed up and hit Conan O’Brien in the face with a pie. The jokes were like comedy 101, completely generic. Alec tried to pick up Rosie . . . OK, that was funny.
Jane Krakowski came out. The show felt like one big commercial for ‘30 Rock’. Jane did a song and strip while showing the audience the free gifts they were getting. Just what every home viewer wants to see – other people getting free stuff?
The usually hilarious Kathy Griffen did a weird Nancy Grace bit? Other stars that didn’t say anything memorable were, Harry Connick Jr, Clay Aiken, and Gloria Estefan.
Alanis Morrisett put everyone to sleep with her dreary ballad that no one knew. And to top it off, Rachael Ray and her hoarse-throat did a song & dance number with veggies.
I really had high hopes for Rosie’s variety show. It can still be saved with better writing, a skit or two with actual sets, and hours of re-tooling, and by that I don’t mean more Alec Baldwin!
