Lucas calls Obama a Jedi

Obama-Wan Kenobi

You might want to change Barack Obama’s name to Obama-Wan Kenobi? While appearing on Capitol Hill to testify at the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Telecommunications, George Lucas  was asked about politicians being characters in the Star Wars universe.

When proded if Senator Barack Obama was a Jedi Knight, Lucas responded, “I would say that is reasonably obvious.”

Maybe Barack is related to Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Mace Windu? If that’s the case, not only would he be the first black president, but also the second black Jedi in the universe.

Barack should play-up his new Jedi status. He could lure the elusive geek vote.

Instead of “Change”, he could talk about ‘The Force’ that binds everything together.

Barack has said that John McCain is really four more years of Bush? He should just call it ‘The Clone Wars’?

Has Star Wars ‘Jumped the Shark’?

Darth Vader jumps the shark

Monday nights edition of the game-show ‘Deal or No Deal’, was a special Star Wars themed episode. The first hour had the suitcase carrying women dressed as Stormtroopers, the second hour followed with them dressed in Princess Leia’s ’slave-girl’ outfit. Darth Vader was the banker.

With the Star Wars franchise being exploited so blatantly for May sweeps ratings, it begs the question: has Star Wars jumped the shark? Some may argue that it ‘jumped’ during 1999 ‘Phantom Menace’ with the annoying Jar-Jar Bink’s, but the franchise gained ground and regrouped with the more enjoyable Episodes 2 and 3.

But going on ‘Deal or No Deal’, a game where no skill is involved, and absolutely no strategy, sure feels like a sell-out? I bet NBC made George Lucas, a deal he couldn’t refuse! ‘Deal or no Deal’ has a long history of dumb gimmicks; I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a ‘Schindler’s List’ edition, where the models are dressed like Holocaust survivors, and the banker is Hitler! They will do anything for ratings.

Shindlers deal

Then again, Star Wars is a part of our pop-culture. There have been many parodys, fan movies, and references about the saga. I must admit, the models in the slave-girl clothes made the game more interesting. Since Star Wars is such a part of the fabric of our culture, maybe it can never truly be sacred, and exploitation is really a form of admiration.

Diva the Hutt

I hate to be mean, but Aretha Franklin brought this upon herself! The Soul diva was miffed Sunday when singer Beyonce called Tina Turner “the Queen”. The Dark-Side was  strong with Aretha as she later told reporters :

“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writer and Beyonce … however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.”

Aretha won her 20th Grammy that night, but (more…)
